Meet published author Selena Fulton
It's all about the journey . . . .

Vickie:  What inspired you to write your first book?

Selena:  My first finished manuscript came from a dream. I woke up thinking about how neat an idea it was and went with it.

Vickie:  What or who has been the biggest influence in your writing career and why?

Selena:  A dear friend of mine, Sheridon Smythe, showed me how to correctly write a synopsis and query letter. She suggested joining RWA and then a local chapter. These suggestions were invaluable to me as a beginner.

Vickie:  What is your current work-in-progress, and can you summarize it in a few lines?

Selena:  My work in progress is sort of a time travel. A woman gets the chance for a do-over, only things don't turn out exactly as she planned.

Vickie:  What is your writing schedule like? For example, do you write any time of the day, or do you prefer a specific time of day? Do you write for a set amount of hours or pages?

Selena:  My best writing times are early morning and in the evenings. I've discovered that even when I have all day to write, I'm most productive at those times. I have some fellow writers that sometimes get together and do "sprints." I've also participated in a group where our goal is to write at least 100 words a day, every day. It helps teach you focus, and really 100 words a day is nothing when you think of it.

Vickie:  What is the most difficult or challenging part of the writing process for you?

Selena:  After publishing my first novella, I'd say the most challenging part of the writing process is the marketing. I would much rather write.

Vickie:  Do you ever experience writers' block? If so, how do you cope with it?

Selena:  When I get stuck, I do other things. I also love to make jewelry. I actually have my beading table directly behind my desk.  I can swivel my chair around and play with the colors and textures. Wherever I go, I'm constantly thinking of my story--driving down the road, taking a shower, etc. So when I am doing repetitive tasks, I'm trying to sort out my plot holes.

Vickie:  Do you plot or write by the seat of your pants? If you're a plotter, do you have any plotting tips to share?

Selena:  Most of the time, I'm a panster. When I plot, it seems like I have a hard time making it "fit."

Vickie:  What is your personal writing goal?

Selena:  I want to see my books in a bookstore. I want to see them on the library shelf. That said, I love the ease of buying e-books.

Vickie:  If you could choose anywhere in the world to write, where would it be?

Selena:  I'd love to own a place overlooking the ocean or at least a river or lake. I'd sit in a screened room with my computer and my coffee. But since I can't, I do enjoy having my desk next to the window where birds come next to the bushes outside.

Vickie:  Describe your writing space, that one corner of the house that is all yours?

Selena:  I consider myself fortunate. I have one room that is all mine. I still haven't arranged it quite the way I want yet, but I'm working on it.

Vickie:  What are you most proud of accomplishing in your life?

Selena:  In my LIFE? I have raised an awesome daughter. Publishing my works is secondary to how I feel about her.

Vickie:  What is the strangest thing that ever happened to you at a workshop, presentation, book signing or conference? What is the funniest?

Selena:  When I made my first presentation at my workshop, I went up with three pages and came back with two. Losing the page got me all flustered. Never did find that third page. Funniest? Not for me, but maybe for others at my table. I was at a book signing with two of my critique partners. My novella hadn't come out yet, but I was there to support them and to absorb the whole book signing experience. Before the event, we had lunch, and I ate some corn fritters or something like that. It was sprinkled with powdered sugar. I was starving and accidentally inhaled the powdered sugar. I thought I'd never catch my breath!

Vickie:  On a personal note, name three things you can't live without?

Selena:  Can't or would rather not? I guess I'd say my computer, my morning cup(s) of coffee, and in Florida, air conditioning!

Vickie:  As a reader, instead of a writer, what is your favorite genre or type of book to read?

Selena:  I love time travels and a good whodunit!

Vickie:  What advice would you like to give, one writer to another?

Selena:  Read. Write. Submit. Never give up. The only sure way to never get published is to stop doing all of those things.

Selena, thank you for taking the time to let us get to know you!
